City of Cumeni

Nephite city fought for by Helaman

City of Cumeni

Cumeni was a Nephite city captured by the Lamanites during the wars recorded by Helaman, listed alongside Manti, Zeezrom, and Antiparah as cities the Lamanites took (Alma 56:13–14). King Ammoron, a descendant of Zoram, commanded the Lamanite forces in this campaign. The city lay generally to the south of Judea and at a greater elevation than Zarahemla, and figured in military actions around 63 B.C. (Alma 56:22, 56:25).

Helaman, who led the band of 2,060 young Ammonite soldiers, moved against Cumeni after the Lamanites held it. His force surrounded the city by night, a little before its defenders were to receive a supply of provisions (Alma 57:7–8). They intercepted the incoming provisions, cut the garrison off from resupply, and after the Lamanites lost hope of relief, the defenders yielded the city (Alma 57:9–12). The Nephites then held Cumeni against a counterattack: Ammoron sent a new supply of provisions and a large army, and the men who had been detailed to escort Lamanite prisoners to Zarahemla returned in time to reinforce Helaman. The 2,060 stood firm, the Lamanites were driven back to the city of Manti, and the Nephites retained Cumeni, though with great loss (Alma 57:17–23).
