Middoni was a Lamanite land where the Nephite missionaries Aaron, Muloki, and Ammah were held in prison. The Lord directed Ammon to go there to deliver them, telling him his brethren were captive at Middoni (Alma 20:2-3). Aaron and a number of his companions had been preaching in Middoni when they were seized and cast into prison, while the rest fled to the surrounding regions (Alma 21:11-13). The prisoners were stripped, their skins worn from being bound with strong cords, and they suffered hunger, thirst, and other afflictions; they had been smitten and driven from place to place before being jailed for many days (Alma 20:29-30; 21:12-15).
Ammon traveled toward Middoni with King Lamoni, whose friend Antiomno ruled the land. On the way they met Lamoni’s father, king over all the land, who ordered Lamoni to kill Ammon; Ammon overpowered him and obtained, in exchange for sparing his life, an order that the prisoners be released. Lamoni then found favor with the king of Middoni, and the missionaries were brought out of prison, fed, and clothed (Alma 20:4-7, 14-15, 27-28; 21:14). The people of the Lamanites in Middoni were among those later converted to the Lord, who became the Anti-Nephi-Lehies and took a covenant of peace (Alma 23:8, 10).
