Twenty-Four Nephites

The Twenty-Four Nephites were the survivors of the final Nephite-Lamanite battle at the hill Cumorah, around AD 385. After the Lamanites had killed all of Mormon’s people, twenty-four remained, among them Moroni, the son of Mormon. From the top of the hill the next morning, once the Lamanites had withdrawn to their camps, they looked out over the ten thousand of Mormon’s command who lay dead (Mormon 6:11). The record lists the twenty-four apart from a few who had escaped into the south countries and a few who had deserted to the Lamanites; all the rest had been killed (Mormon 6:15).

The Nephites who had escaped southward were afterward hunted by the Lamanites until they were all destroyed (Mormon 8:2). Mormon himself was killed, leaving Moroni alone to finish the record; Moroni did not know whether the Lamanites would also slay him (Mormon 8:3). The Lamanites had hunted the Nephites from city to city until they were no more (Mormon 8:7). The fate of the other twenty-three survivors is not recorded.
