Kings of the Isles

The kings of the isles of the sea appear in Nephi’s quotation of the prophet Zenos, who foretold that at the death of the God of Israel the rocks of the earth would rend and that, because of the groanings of the earth, many of these kings would be wrought upon by the Spirit of God to exclaim, “The God of nature suffers” (1 Nephi 19:12). The surrounding prophecy ties this to the three days of darkness given as a sign of Christ’s death to those who inhabit the isles of the sea (1 Nephi 19:10-11).

Nephi places their reaction alongside the response of those at Jerusalem, who crucify the God of Israel and reject the signs (1 Nephi 19:13). The exclamation parallels the Roman centurion’s words at the crucifixion, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matt 27:54).

The record does not name these kings or locate their islands; it states only that they are among the inhabitants of the isles of the sea, whom Zenos elsewhere identifies as scattered house of Israel to be gathered in (1 Nephi 19:16).
