“Gentiles Upon the Water” names the Gentiles whom Nephi saw in vision going forth out of captivity, across the many waters, to the promised land where the seed of his brethren dwelt (1 Nephi 13:13). They are distinguished in the vision from the single man, also moved upon by the Spirit of God, who first crossed the many waters to that land (1 Nephi 13:12); that man is traditionally read as Christopher Columbus and the later Gentiles as the European settlers who followed him. Nephi saw these Gentiles arrive in multitudes, prosper, and obtain the land for their inheritance while the seed of his brethren were scattered and smitten before them (1 Nephi 13:14-15). The Gentiles who had come out of captivity humbled themselves before the Lord, and their mother Gentiles gathered on the waters and the land to battle against them, but they were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations (1 Nephi 13:16-19).
