The Choice Seer is the latter-day prophet foretold by Joseph who was sold into Egypt, in a prophecy Lehi quotes from the brass plates. Joseph declared that the Lord would raise up a seer from his lineage, “a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins,” who would be esteemed highly among Joseph’s descendants and given a commandment to do a work of great worth to them, bringing them to the knowledge of the covenants made with their fathers (2 Nephi 3:6, JST Genesis 50:26). This seer was to do no other work than what the Lord commanded, and was promised to be made great and to be like Moses, who delivered Israel out of Egypt (2 Nephi 3:7-10).
The Choice Seer was to be given power to bring forth the Lord’s word to the descendants of Joseph and to convince them of the word that had already gone out among them, working by the gift and power of God despite his own weakness (2 Nephi 3:11, 13). The writings of Joseph’s descendants and the writings of Judah’s descendants would grow together, confounding false doctrines, ending contentions, and bringing Joseph’s posterity to the knowledge of their fathers and of the Lord’s covenants in the latter days (2 Nephi 3:12, JST Genesis 50:31). Those who sought to destroy the seer would be confounded (2 Nephi 3:14).
The seer’s name was to be called after Joseph’s own name and after the name of his father (2 Nephi 3:15). The entry identifies this seer as Joseph Smith Jr., who brought forth and published the record (2 Nephi 3:11-12).
