The man in the white robe is the unnamed figure who appears at the opening of Lehi’s dream of the tree of life. During Lehi’s dream in the wilderness, he saw a man dressed in a white robe, who came and stood before him (1 Nephi 8:5) and bade him follow. As Lehi followed, he found himself in a dark and dreary waste, where he traveled for many hours in darkness (1 Nephi 8:6-7). The man does not lead Lehi to the tree: after Lehi prayed to the Lord for mercy, he beheld a large field and a tree whose fruit he went forth and partook of (1 Nephi 8:8-11). The text does not name or identify the man, and he is not mentioned again in the dream. A man in a white robe appears again in Nephi’s parallel vision (1 Nephi 14:19).
