Rending garments as token

Rending garments as token is the act by which people tore their clothing as a covenant before God. After Moroni proclaimed his words, the people came with “their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant,” that they would not forsake the Lord their God (Alma 46:21).

The covenant stated that if they transgressed the commandments of God and were ashamed to take upon them the name of Christ, “the Lord should rend them even as they had rent their garments” (Alma 46:21). The people cast their garments at Moroni’s feet and said, “We covenant with our God,” asking that they be cast at their enemies’ feet if they fell into transgression (Alma 46:22).
