Church of God is the name borne by those baptized by the power and authority of God and added to his church. Alma ordained priests to preach and teach “the things pertaining to the kingdom of God” (Mosiah 18:17-19).
Alma commanded the people to preach “repentance and faith on the Lord,” to avoid contention, and to have “one faith and one baptism” (Mosiah 18:20-21). They gathered one day each week to teach and worship, and they imparted of their substance according to what they had (Mosiah 18:25, 27).
King Mosiah granted Alma power to establish churches throughout Zarahemla and to ordain priests and teachers over every church (Mosiah 25:19). Though seven churches assembled in different bodies, “they were all one church, yea, even the church of God” (Mosiah 25:21).
