Calno (Near East geography model)

Calno is a city named once in scripture, in Isaiah’s words as quoted by Nephi: “Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?” (2 Nephi 20:9). The line is part of a boast put in the mouth of the king of Assyria, who lists conquered cities in pairs to argue that Jerusalem will fall as the others did (2 Nephi 20:5-11). The rhetorical question asks, in effect, whether Calno has not already been destroyed just as Carchemish was.

Some identify this Calno with the Calneh of Amos 6:2, named in a similar list of fallen cities. It is distinct from the Calneh of Genesis 10:10, a city in the land of Shinar (Babylon).
