Sea North (Heartland geography model)

Body of water north of Nephite lands

Sea North (Heartland geography model)

The Sea North is mentioned in the Book of Mormon as the northern limit of the Nephite expansion during the period of their history recorded in the book of Helaman. This body of water formed one of the natural boundaries of the territory occupied by the people described in the text. Following a period of considerable growth and prosperity, the Nephites began to spread out from the land southward to the land northward, reaching as far as the waters of the Sea North. The expanse of Nephite settlements is described as covering the face of the earth from the sea south to the sea north, as well as from the sea west to the sea east, indicating a vast area of influence and settlement patterns (Helaman 3:8). This period of geographic expansion implies that the Nephite civilization reached a high level of social organization and capacity for migration. There are no detailed accounts of the characteristics of the Sea North or the specific settlements along its coasts in the existing text. The Sea North is not referenced as the setting for significant events in the Book of Mormon, nor is it described in detail, leaving its exact nature and size, as well as its navigability and resource availability, largely open to interpretation.
