Anathoth

Levite city near old Jerusalem

Anathoth

Anathoth was a Levitical city in the tribal allotment of Benjamin, north of Jerusalem and the hometown of the prophet Jeremiah and of the priest Abiathar. It is named once in Nephi’s quotation of Isaiah, in the oracle tracing an invading army’s advance on Jerusalem through the towns to its north: “Lift up the voice, O daughter of Gallim; cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth” (2 Nephi 20:30). The surrounding verses list the army passing Aiath, Migron, Michmash, Geba, Ramath, Gibeah, and Nob as it nears the hill of Jerusalem (2 Nephi 20:28-32).
