Morianton¹

In the sequence of Jaredite rulers listed at the beginning of the Book of Ether, Morianton occurs about midway between Jared, founder of the Jaredite nation, and Ether, the final prophet. “And Kim was the son of Morianton. And Morianton was a descendant of Riplakish”. Riplakish had been killed in a revolt by his people who were determined to put an end to his profligate spending and burdensome taxation. After many years, Morianton organized an offensive that gave him dominion over the people. By easing their burdens, he gained their support, with the result that they anointed him king. “And he did do justice unto the people, but not unto himself because of his many whoredoms; wherefore he was cut off from the presence of the Lord”. Under Morianton, the country flourished materially and greatly expanded its cities and commercial undertakings. His son Kim succeeded him, and a period of considerable turmoil ensued.
