City of Gilgal (Tehuantepec geography model)

City destroyed at the crucifixion

City of Gilgal (Tehuantepec geography model)

Gilgal was a Nephite city destroyed at the time of Christ’s crucifixion. In the voice heard across the land during the destruction, Christ declared that he had caused the city of Gilgal to be sunk and its inhabitants buried up in the depths of the earth (3 Nephi 9:6). It is named in a list of cities punished for the iniquity of their people (3 Nephi 9:1-2). The record gives no account of its location, inhabitants, or society beyond this. A Nephite military leader also named Gilgal fell with his ten thousand troops in the final battle against the Lamanites (Mormon 6:14); the text does not connect him to the city.
