“The Things Are Called Interpreters”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Reference is here made to what is normally called the Urim and Thummim. The Urim and Thummim consists of two special stones, or as Ammon refers to them, “interpreters.”

The Hebrew words urim and thummim (both plural) may be associated with the words lights and perfections (see James Orr, The Intemational Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, 4:3040).

These seeric devices are used in receiving revelations and in translating ancient scriptural records which have been written in tongues unknown to the translators.

Thus the content of such records can be manifest only as the Lord wills and only through his appointed prophet and seer.
