What was Sherem’s intent when he confronted Jacob?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Sherem … said, ‘Brother Jacob [speaking to him very benevolently], I have sought much opportunity that I might speak unto you; … thou goest about much, preaching … the doctrine of Christ [oh, no]. And ye have led away much of this people that they pervert the right way of God, and keep not the law of Moses which is the right way.’ See, he is teaching the orthodox way; he’s doing what’s right. He’s Sherem, the defender of the faith of orthodoxy” (Nibley, Teachings of the Book of Mormon, 1:5–8).
