Immediately following his warning about being taught by the "precepts of men," we find this: "O the wise, and the learned, and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts, and all those who preach false doctrines." (2 Nephi 28: 15.) The link between being "learned" and "pride" and preaching "false doctrine" is clear. It takes a good deal of study to acquire some forms of ignorance. And, once acquired, those holding degrees and titles are never hesitant to share their ignorance. We should be careful about such people, as our culture holds them up for admiration. Nephi can warn about the problem, but it remains our challenge to actually do something about it. Little wonder "the few, who are the humble followers of Christ" are "led that they do err." As PhD's multiply among the Saints, so too does spiritual ignorance.
