“The Pride of the World”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

The large and spacious building also represents the pride of the world. The world, just now, is very proud of its wisdom, although it is a building standing "as it were in the air," doomed to fall.

"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (Prov. 29:23)

Pride was the downfall of Lucifer. It was manifested, first, in his exaggerated estimate of himself. Did he not come before the Lord God and in a boastful spirit asserted his ability to redeem all mankind? "One soul shall not be lost." It was secondly, manifested in his demand for reward: "I will be thy Son." "Give me thine honor." It was, finally, manifested in his rebellion against the allwise decision of God. Then he was cast out. (Book of Moses, Pearl of Great Price, 4:1-4; B. of 76:25-29. Compare Is. 14:3-23, where the destruction of Babylon is depicted under the imagery of the fall of Lucifer.)

Korah, Dalthan and Abiram rose up against Moses, and were swallowed by the earth. (Acts 12:21-23)

Surely, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." (James 4:6)
