Bethabara is the place beyond the Jordan River where, Lehi prophesied, a prophet who would come before the Messiah would baptize with water and would baptize the Messiah himself (1 Nephi 10:9). Lehi named it while prophesying to his sons of the prophet who would prepare the way of the Lord and baptize the Lamb of God (1 Nephi 10:7-10). The name appears only this once in the record; the verse places it “beyond Jordan” but gives no further geographic detail. It is identified with the east bank of the Jordan opposite Jericho, in the region of Peraea, at a fording point across the river — consistent with the Hebrew sense of the name, “place of crossing.” Some biblical manuscripts read “Bethany beyond Jordan” at the corresponding location in John’s Gospel.
