Irreantum is the name Lehi’s party gave to the sea they reached at the land they called Bountiful, after traveling in the wilderness. The text glosses the name as “many waters” (1 Nephi 17:5). At this seashore the group later built the ship and set sail for the promised land.
Irreantum is one of the few geographic terms in the record given with an explicit interpretation. Its derivation has been analyzed for possible Semitic and Egyptian roots consistent with the gloss “many waters,” though no single etymology is established.
