The Power to Baptize

3 Nephi 11:18

Jesus calls for Nephi and asks him to come forward.

And it came to pass that he spake unto Nephi (for Nephi was among the multitude) and he commanded him that he should come forth.

3 Nephi 11:19–20

Nephi comes forward, kisses Jesus’ feet, and stands up.

And Nephi arose and went forth, and bowed himself before the Lord and did kiss his feet. And the Lord commanded him that he should arise. And he arose and stood before him.

3 Nephi 11:21–22, 12:1, 19:4

Jesus selects twelve disciples, including Nephi, and gives them authority to baptize.

And the Lord said unto him:

“I give unto you power
that ye shall baptize this people
when I am again ascended into heaven.”

And again the Lord called others, and said unto them likewise; and he gave unto them power to baptize.


Now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve.


Behold, Nephi and his brother whom he had raised from the dead, whose name was Timothy, and also his son, whose name was Jonas, and also Mathoni, and Mathonihah, his brother, and Kumen, and Kumenonhi , and Jeremiah, and Shemnon, and Jonas, and Zedekiah, and Isaiah —now these were the names of the disciples whom Jesus had chosen.

3 Nephi 11:22–41

Jesus gives detailed instructions on how to baptize, then outlines his fundamental doctrines of faith, repentance, and the unity of God.
