“The Church Did Meet Together Oft”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

It has been suggested that an appropriate epitaph for a Latter-day Saint would be: “Gone to another meeting.” Indeed, we do attend many meetings. But there is one meeting in particular that we should attend often. We need to gather together often to fast, to pray, to talk about the doctrines of the kingdom, to partake of the sacramental emblems to remember our Savior, to renew covenants made at baptism, and to cleanse ourselves on a weekly basis and become totally free from sin—if we have exercised faith in him and repented of our sins before attending the meeting and partaking of the sacrament.

We sometimes hear people say from the pulpit after the sacrament has been administered, “Well, we’ve fulfilled our purpose in being here today.” Not according to Moroni. We also attend sacrament meeting to fast, to pray, and to speak to one another concerning the welfare of our souls.
