“They Were About to Flee for Their Lives”

Brant Gardner

Coriantumr and his men are technically victorious, but only because they can still stagger away. The telling of the story makes it appear that Shiz rose to give battle just as Coriantumr and his men were leaving, yet verse 29 describes Shiz in pursuit. It seems more likely that Shiz and some of his men had recovered enough strength to launch this pursuit. Had Coriantumr and his men had any advantage over Shiz and his men, who were also weak, they would have taken it immediately to slay them. The pursuit suggests that some time passed but that Ether (or Moroni) used it to heighten the story’s suspense.
