“People Began to Flock Together in Armies”

Brant Gardner

Again, just like the Nephites, the final piece of the pattern is the division of the people between two political foci. Among the Nephites, the division was Nephite versus Lamanite. For the Jaredites, the division was between Coriantumr and Shiz. Particularly tragic is the additional parallel that both divisions are intrafamilial—explicitly so in the Nephite/Lamanite case and deduced from Jaredite history in their turn. Both are peoples who should be joined by family ties who are nevertheless bent on totally destroying the other.
