“Wherefore, Man Must Hope”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

In the Plan of Salvation Hope is necessary as well as Faith. "Man must hope, or he cannot receive an inheritance in the place which Thou hast prepared." "In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you..." (John 14:2) Hope for a place in one of these mansions is one of those fair and fragrant flowers of Christ's Gospel, and the sweet fruit of Faith.

It is easy to understand that Hope and Faith are inseparable; Faith reveals things the possession of which we hope. Hope is a desire to obtain what Faith reveals. Hope becomes greater as through the eye of faith we see the glories and the rewards of righteous living. Hope is the power that urges us onward along that path which is Straight and Narrow. Hope stresses ardor, and to us it connotes striving.

"And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you concerning Hope. How is it you can attain unto faith, save ye shall have hope? And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the Atonement of Christ and the power of His resurrection, to be raised unto Life Eternal, and this because of your faith in Him according to the promise. Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope." (Moroni 7:40-42)

"But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the Kingdom of God. And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them..." (Jacob 2:18-19)

"For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of Christ, and we had a hope of His glory many hundred years before His coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of His glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us." (Jacob 4:4)

"And if ye have no hope ye must needs be in despair; and despair cometh because of iniquity." (Moroni 10:22)

Let us now refer to some passages of Scripture found in the Holy Bible:

"Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God." (Psalm 146:5)

"O Lord, the Hope of Israel, all that forsake Thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the Fountain of Living Waters." (Jeremiah 17:13)

"And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then we do with patience wait for it." (Romans 8:23-25)

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:13)
