Memories: Buoyant Grace

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Many years ago, when I was preparing to marry a choice and glorious young woman of Zion who had had the courage to say yes, I went to my bishop with a challenge. My feelings of inadequacy as a prospective partner of such a wonderful girl were weighing me down. The bishop heard me out patiently and then opened the Book of Mormon to Ether 12. Together, we read the account of how Moroni struggled within his soul at his own perceived inadequacies, and how the Lord spoke comfort to Him with a promise that the humble and faithful can ask for, and receive access to, the gift of eternal grace, which can lift a person to the level of strength sufficient for accomplishing all that is required. Indeed, the humble are strengthened through the grace of Christ. “By faith all things are fulfilled” (Ether 12:3) is how the prophet Ether had said it. After the bishop and I had visited for period of time over these grand principles, we had a prayer together, and I left, relieved and edified. My plans went forward. The choice was confirmed and the marriage consummated. It was the best choice I ever made. (Richard J. Allen)
