“It Was by Faith That Christ Showed Himself Unto Our Fathers”

Brant Gardner

As an example of faith’s importance, Moroni uses the most important witness that his world had known: the Messiah’s appearance at Bountiful. Believers and unbelievers mingled before that visit, but the Savior came to believers. Moroni assumes that his readers already know this story and simply sketches it here. In particular, he expects his readers to remember that the faithful were persecuted before the Savior’s appearance. Their faith underwent severe trials but was rewarded by the glorious appearance that justified their faith.

Although the Jaredite experience provides the historical foundation for Moroni’s discussion on faith, he draws on the Nephite experience to build his case.
