“Many Prophets Prophesied of Destruction”

Monte S. Nyman

In addition to the completion of Com’s reign, two other generations are discussed in these verses, Shiblom and Seth. However, there is only one comment about Seth’s generation, that he dwelt in captivity all his days (v. 9). Com’s protection of the prophets may have accounted for his being blessed and living to a good old age (vv. 2–4). The prophecy of the people’s bones becoming “as heaps of earth” (v. 6) was fulfilled in the destruction of the Jaredites six generations later. In the final war, none were left to bury their dead (see Ether 14:21–22). The expedition of the Nephite King Limhi, seeking to find the land of Zarahemla and overshooting their destination, “discovered a land which was covered with bones of men, and of beasts, and was also covered with ruins of buildings” (Mosiah 8:8). The prophecy of the prophets (Ether 11:6) was certainly fulfilled. The mercy of the Lord was short-lived because the next kings returned to iniquity.
