“The Reign of Riplakish Compared to the Nephite King Noah”

Monte S. Nyman

There are fourteen or fifteen generations of Jaredites discussed in Ether 10. According to the Jaredite genealogy, Shez was a son of Heth even though he is called a descendant in the above text (v. 1). Shez was a good king but little is known of him in the four verses quoted above. Noah, son of Zeniff, a Nephite king, is a carbon copy of Riplakish, son of Shez, who succeeded his father (v. 5). A comparison of Riplakish with Noah shows that they both had many wives and concubines, heavy taxation, and beautiful buildings adorned with precious things (see Mosiah 11:1–11). The length of King Noah’s reign is not given, but both reigned for a generation (Riplakish for 42 yrs). Both kings were killed by their own people (Ether 10:8 and Mosiah 19:20).
