“Orihah Did Walk Humbly Before the Lord”

Brant Gardner

Orihah is successful because “did walk humbly before the Lord,” thereby retaining the land’s promise in force. The proof is that “the people… became exceedingly rich.” This second generation is too early to have been the flourishing of the great Olmec cultures, but “exceeding rich” is a comparative term. A centralized government, a reasonably sizeable work force, and general peace have long been the source of improved economic and social conditions. Kings arise because they are useful.
