“Ye Shall Write Them and Shall Seal Them Up”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: Moroni abruptly returns to the source text, which stresses that Yahweh’s Messianic incarnation be kept sealed until after the Messiah’s mortal ministry. Even though the brother of Jared unquestionably obeyed, the event was written in sufficient detail in Ether’s record that Mosiah and Moroni could refer to it and Moroni could mention its sealing. Perhaps the difference lies in the phrase “go forth unto the world.” Ether, Mosiah, and Moroni all had access to the record, but it did not go forth to the world until the publication of the Book of Mormon. It was private knowledge, not general information. This characteristic explains how Alma knew about this record (Alma 37:21) but there is no other reference to it in the entire Book of Mormon until Moroni abridged Ether’s record.
