Jesus appearing to the Nephites (v. 17) is referring to appearances before he was resurrected, not his divine ministry as a resurrected being (see 1 Nephi 2:16; 2 Nephi 11:2–3). For a man to know that Jesus Christ is God (Ether 3:18) is to recognize his role as the administrative God of Old Testament times (see 1 Nephi 19:10; 2 Nephi 11:7). The brother of Jared not being kept from beholding within the veil has reference to two different experiences. The first is the time when he saw the vision of the Lord’s finger (Ether 3:19). The second was when he saw him as a spirit (v. 20). There were other times, but one other experience is described below.
