“The Brother of Jared Did Built Barges After the Manner Which They Had Built”

Brant Gardner

This verse corroborates that they have already had one barge-building experience (“after the manner of barges which ye have hitherto built”). It is not clear why the barges are described at the second stage, rather than the first. Perhaps, since the barges were basically the same, the original text described them for the first journey, but Moroni elected to describe them here for literary reasons. The fact that new barges must be constructed suggests that the Jaredites had dismantled the former vessels during the four years they had spent at Moriancumer, perhaps recycling them to make homes. The description of the construction will not fit barges, boats, or ships. Perhaps whatever word was used on the plates of Ether intentionally indicated the foreignness of the vessels.
