“Free from Bondage and from Captivity and from All Other Nations Under Heaven”

Alan C. Miner

According to Lee Donaldson, the biblical scholar George Mendenhall identified six common steps in ancient covenants and treaties (Interpreter's Dictionary 1:714): (1) the preamble, (2) historical prologue, (3) stipulations, (4) blessings and curses, (5) witnesses, and (6) deposit and public reading of the covenant.

Moroni cites the blessing part of the Lord's covenant with the brother of Jared in Ether 2:12: "Whatsoever nation shall possess it [the promised land] shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven . . ." The curses are enumerated by Moroni in Ether 2:8-9, "they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them," and "the fulness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity."
