Moroni is obviously interested in this promised-land oath. The Jaredites had the same conditional promise as the Nephites, and Moroni well knew that the Jaredites were “swept off” by the time the Nephites arrived in Zarahemla, some six hundred years before Moroni’s time. Moroni is also painfully aware that his people had received a similar promise and suffered a similar fate for a similar reason. With two failed peoples as his example, Moroni now speaks to his audience—future readers.
