“Brother of Jared, Man of Supreme Faith”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Students of the gospel remember the brother of Jared with deep admiration as one honored by the Lord for his extraordinary faith: “And the Lord said unto him … never has man come before me with such exceeding faith as thou hast” (Ether 3:9). So strong is the faith of the brother of Jared that he cannot be kept from within the veil and views in person the spirit body of the Savior (see Ether 3:19–20). Subsequently, the Lord shows the brother of Jared, by virtue of his unshakeable faith, a vision of the panorama of the divine plan for the immortality and eternal life of mankind (see Ether 3:25–26). The Lord commands him to record these things and seal them up, along with the two interpreting stones, to come forth at a later time. What the brother of Jared writes is of transcending magnificence, as Moroni later confirms: “Behold, I have written upon these plates the very things which the brother of Jared saw; and there never were greater things made manifest than those which were made manifest unto the brother of Jared” (Ether 4:4). And further: “Behold, thou hast not made us mighty in writing like unto the brother of Jared, for thou madest him that the things which he wrote were mighty even as thou art, unto the overpowering of man to read them” (Ether 12:24).

Propelled by such glorious views of the destiny of mankind, the brother of Jared follows the guidance of the Lord in accompanying his extended circle of family members on the 344-day voyage to the promised land (see Ether 6:11). There they found a new nation based on the Lord’s mandate: “Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ” (Ether 2:12). The brother of Jared has a large family of twenty-two sons and daughters. With devotion and loyalty he completes his ministry of unsurpassed faith, which enables him even to remove a mountain from its place (see Ether 12:30). The extraordinary chronicle he leaves behind becomes part of the twenty-four plates later discovered around 121 BC by Limhi’s people (see Mosiah 8:9) and included in the sacred archive handed down to Mormon and Moroni. Through the blessings of the Lord, we have before us again in the latter days the remarkable testimony of the brother of Jared, together with the witness of all of the Lord’s anointed, who confirm the sanctity of the gospel plan and the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Redeemer of mankind.
