6 And on this wise do I give the account. He that wrote this record was Ether, and he was a descendant of Coriantor.

It is very obvious that Moroni focused on the first generation, headed by Jared, and the last generation telling of the warning by the Prophet Ether before the Jaredite nation was destroyed. A few of the other twenty-nine generations have a more detailed description given than do the others. These descriptions are regarding their wickedness because of secret combinations, or their exceptional righteousness.

Moroni’s purpose in including the above genealogy is not given. Someday it will be important, but for now it tells us there were at least thirty-one generations of Jaredites in the record. Three times the word “descendant” is used instead of “son,” implying more than one generation. However, two of those three times the abridged record says it was a son, clarifying it was only one generation. The reference has been added above (see vv. 6, and 16). The third time the word descendant is used it is also worded the same in the abridged text (see v. 10 above).

The record keeper was apparently Jared (v. 33), who was probably the older of the two brothers, and therefore responsible for the keeping of a record. Adam had kept a book of his generations (see Genesis 5:1; Moses 6:8), and the pattern of such books of remembrances, given to him by God, seems to have been passed down (see Moses 6:5, 46; Genesis 11:16). The confounding of the languages at the time of the great tower is consistent with the Genesis record.

4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. [Genesis 11:4–9]

The scattering upon all the face of the earth is also verified in Genesis. There are no accounts in Genesis of people traveling to other parts of the world, but they undoubtedly were scattered elsewhere. The inclusion of the scattering to the western hemisphere would be a must to fulfill the decree of God to scatter the people to all the face of the earth (v. 33; Genesis 11:9).
