“Vengeance is the Lord's and He Will Repay”

Monte S. Nyman

Those who use physical or mental arguments against the covenant people of the Lord, his word, or his work will reap as they sow (vv. 18–21). They will not only be accountable but will receive the same eternal consequences. In Alma’s words: “The meaning of the word restoration is to bring back again evil for evil, or carnal for carnal, or devilish for devilish” (Alma 41:13). The voice of the Lord had told Mormon (see Mormon 3:15) what Moroni is now teaching which is, as the scripture says: “Vengeance is mine also, and I will repay” (Mormon 8:20). Is this a plain and precious part that has been lost, or does Moroni call it lost because it came from the Lord? Scripture is what men “speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost” (D&C 64:4). Either way it is a truth that will be observed by the Lord at the time and the place of his choosing. The eternal purposes will roll on until the promises and purposes are fulfilled (v. 22). “Remember, it is not the work of God that is frustrated, but the work of men” (D&C 3:3). The Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith: “How long can rolling waters remain impure? What power shall stay the heavens? As well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop the Missouri river in its decreed course, or to turn it up stream, as to hinder the Almighty from pouring down knowledge from heaven upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints” (D&C 121:33).
