Only twenty-four Nephites survived the slaughter. This is a remarkably small number, since typically there would be many more wounded than dead. This detail communicates that the Lamanite goal was not only to gain dominance but to assure destruction. They obviously focused on delivering killing strokes, either in the initial attack or as a second sweep through the battlefield among the wounded.
