“The Nephites Did Again Flee from Before Them”

Brant Gardner

The Nephites had responded to the first instance of the capture and sacrifice of women and children by an impassioned and successful counterattack. This time, they retreated, taking with them “all the inhabitants… both in towns and villages,” a tactic that Mormon has used earlier (Morm. 3:5). Since women and children are now vulnerable to sacrifice, the only way to protect them is to remove them from the enemy’s path.
