Even though the Nephites were able to defeat the Lamanites, it was through their own strength, not through the sustaining power of the Lord (v. 8). This had been the case before (see Mormon 2:26; cited also above). Both sides suffered thousands of deaths (Mormon 4:9); the wicked were still punishing the wicked.
