“Out of the Land Desolation”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

The land Desolation is rendered in Hebrew Eretz Horbah, the latter word having the same root word as Horeb (another name for Mount Sinai), which means “destroyed, dry parched land; ruins, deserted or depopulated wasteland.” Compare “waste cities” in Isaiah 61:4; see also Jeremiah 49:13.
