After two victories defending the city of Desolation, the pride and arrogance of the Nephites knew no bounds. They determined to take the offensive in the open territory, and contrary to Mormon's advice, fiercely slaughter the Lamanites to avenge the loss of life which the Nephites had suffered in defending the city of Desolation.
