“They Did Not Come Unto Jesus with Broken Hearts and Contrite Spirits”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

We can understand more clearly the meaning and implication of this phrase—used by the resurrected Lord in teaching the people how to come unto Him and be saved (see 3 Nephi 9:20)—by contrasting it with the arrogant and bloodthirsty demeanor of the Nephites of Mormon’s day. They will not come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, but rather with vengeful hearts and haughty spirits.
