“I Perceive That Thou Art a Sober Child and Art Quick to Observe”

W. Cleon Skousen

Mormon wastes no time on preliminaries but plunges right into the first remarkable event in his life which occurred when he was ten years old. A portrayal of Mormon being presented to Ammaron appears on page 139 of volume 4 of Treasures from the Book of Mormon.Mormon says he was already beginning to get a grasp on the learning of the Nephites which included both Hebrew and an efficient form of the Egyptian language.

It was at this time that Ammaron, the Nephite historian, came to Mormon and gave the lad a heavy assignment. Ammaron said he had observed that Mormon was a sober child, but quick to observe what was happening around him. We gain the impression that Ammaron had also probably received an instruction from the Lord concerning this young Mormon.
