“A Sober Child and Quick to Observe”

Monte S. Nyman

For Ammoran to have to go to a ten-year-old to find someone he could trust (v. 2) tells us a lot about the wickedness of the people at that time. For Mormon to wait for fourteen more years before he would begin to keep a record (vv. 2–4) places a big responsibility upon the young man. However, God knew him and had chosen him for this work in the pre-mortal life. The Prophet Joseph Smith said: “Every man who has a calling to minister to the inhabitants of the world was ordained to that very purpose in the Grand Council of heaven before the world was” (TPJS, 365). God undoubtedly directed Ammoran to Mormon. God does call young people and educate them for their life’s mission before they begin (see 1 Samuel 1–3; D&C 20:5–8). We will see that Mormon is no exception, and he was prepared for a mission that will eventually affect the whole world. He must have kept some sort of record in the interim so he would have some materials to draw upon when he began his record. He does not identify from which of the many Nephi’s he was a descendant, but we assume it was the son of Lehi. If it was another Nephi, he still came from a dependable and spiritual family
