“O Thou Afflicted, Tossed with Tempest, and Not Comforted!”

Brant Gardner

Jesus speaks tenderly, through Isaiah’s words, to the Nephites in their separation from Israel, addressing them as “thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted.” He then follows with gorgeous metaphors of building (in this context) the New Jerusalem with precious stones: sapphires, agates, carbuncles, “fair colors,” and “pleasant stones.”

Vocabulary: A carbuncle is any deep red gem.
