“So Have I Sworn That I Would Not Be Wroth with Thee”

Brant Gardner

The New International Version (NIV) renders this verse more clearly: “To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again.” God, speaking through Isaiah, declares that this promise is as binding as his promise to Noah that waters would never again cover the earth. His listeners know that this promise has been kept. Because Yahweh kept that first promise, they can know that he will keep this second promise. God’s “anger” here has caused the separation, so the promise in the Nephite context is of reunion.
