“If He Goeth Through Both Treadeth Down and Teareth in Pieces”

W. Cleon Skousen

Without identifying the prophet or where it can be found in the scriptures, Jesus refers back to the prophecy of Micah 4:12-13 and 5:8-15. We briefly discussed this prophecy when we covered 3 Nephi 16:13. In that passage the Savior said that if the Gentiles repented the Lord would not allow the Gentiles to be trodden down by the seed of Jacob as Micah had predicted. Nevertheless Jesus warns the Gentiles of the latter days that if they do not repent the seed of Jacob or the Lamanites will descend upon the wicked Gentiles like a lion to destroy them from off the face of the western hemisphere. But this is a conditional prophecy. In this present verse the Lord says this terrible destruction will take place only if they do not repent.

17. Thy hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

Note that if the cleansing of the Gentiles finally occurs, the seed of Jacob will not only cleanse the land of all the wicked Gentiles but it says that all who are the enemies of God's people will be destroyed, both at home and abroad.
