“An Exceedingly Great Number”

Brant Gardner

Notifying outlying relatives may well have taken the entire night, but even the “exceedingly great number” was necessarily limited by foot travel, distance, and darkness. Also, they probably did not have kin in other cities and therefore probably would not have tried to make such contacts.
